Dear Global Business Enthusiast,

Michael Michelini (@michelini) here. You’re getting this email because you requested my periodic thoughts on international business from Hong Kong.

This week: Swiss leaks, criminal or hero? Singapore richer than HK? Disappearing dolphins and more.

Skipped last week’s newsletter – was exhausted, but overjoyed with our first live podcast recording! Will release that interview right before Christmas, keep an eye out – and if you’re in the HK area we’re doing another one Tuesday Dec 15, signup now

Switzerland’s federal criminal court found HSBC whistleblower Herve Falciani guilty of aggravated industrial espionage on Friday, and sentenced him to 5 years prison. Falciani himself refused to travel to Switzerland to face the charges, on the grounds he believed he would not receive a fair trial. The latest news about the trial is below, but to find out more about the man behind the HSBC data leak that led to ICIJ’s Swiss Leaks investigation, check out this great profile by ICIJ’s Martha Hamilton.

A great video about Lee Kuan Yew: The man behind Singapore’s success. As Singapore celebrates its 50 year birthday, what’s next?

Where did all the dolphins go?

Seems the expanding of the Hong Kong airport may risk losing the last of HK’s famous white (though they look pink in the photo) dolphins.

Photo of the Week

Here’s a great photo Andre Martin captured towards the end of the live podcast recording. Jon Buford came up and shared, quite an … interesting story of local HK marketing tactics and presentation.
